Who needs a switchboard upgrade for solar
Not every solar or EV charger job needs a new switchboard. What usually matters is whether the board has free spaces for the new circuits and protection devices, and whether it is modern enough to accept them. Older boards with fuses, or boards with no room left, are the ones installers tend to flag before quoting.
Understanding the installer's note on your board
When a solar or charger quote comes back with a switchboard note, it usually means one of two things: the board is full, or it is too old to take new breakers safely. Ask the installer which one they meant, because the answer changes the scope of the board work.
A board ready for new loads
A board that is ready for solar, a battery or a charger has room for a dedicated circuit breaker for each new item, safety switch protection on those circuits, and a tidy layout with space left for later. Planning a renovation or extension at the same time? Allow for those circuits too.
Circuit space versus supply capacity
Space and capacity are separate problems. Space means free spots inside the enclosure; capacity means how much power the supply can deliver at once. A bigger board solves space, not capacity. A fast EV charger may raise a supply question, sometimes three phase power, and network connection changes can need distributor approval.
The decision on a full switchboard replacement
A full replacement makes sense when the board still has ceramic fuses, a dark backing panel, or no realistic way to add spaces. If the board is modern but full, a larger enclosure or a rearranged layout may be enough. Ask each quote to state which option it prices, so you compare the same job.
Licensing, paperwork and contracts
Any wiring on the switchboard must be done by someone holding a NSW electrical licence or certificate, whatever the job size. Once finished, the work is tested and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is lodged and given to you. Jobs over $5,000 including GST need a written contract.
Your next step before the solar install
List what you plan to add, such as panels, a battery, an EV charger or air conditioning, along with your suburb. Then you can request a solar ready board quote here, and a licensed and insured local contractor can follow up. Keep the installer's switchboard note handy so the board quote matches exactly what they asked for.
Solar Ready Switchboard Upgrade Services We Offer
✓Adding Space to a Modern Board
For a newer board that is simply full: a larger enclosure or reorganised layout so the new circuits fit.
✓Full Replacement for Solar Readiness
For an old fuse board that cannot take new breakers: a new board sized with spare room for future loads.
✓EV Charger Circuit Preparation
A dedicated, protected circuit on the board so a home charger can be connected.
How it works
- 1
Read the installer's flag
Note whether the solar or charger quote mentions a lack of space, an old board or limits on the supply.
- 2
Inspect the board and supply
The contractor checks free spaces, the condition of the board and whether the supply suits the loads you plan to add.
- 3
Add space or replace
The board gets extra room or is replaced, with dedicated breakers and safety switch cover for each new circuit.
- 4
Test and certify
The work is tested and a CCEW is lodged and provided to you, so the solar or charger install can go ahead.
